UT Arlington hitters struggle at plate, fall to Texas State

One night after clinching a spot in the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament, UT Arlington fell to host Texas State 4-1 on Friday.

Scott Grist of the Bobcats pitched a complete-game five-hitter and Ben McElroy hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning.

UTA (23-29, 14-15 Sun Belt) scored in the first inning on back-to-back singles by Matt McLean and Travis Sibley and an RBI groundout by Jackson Morris.

The Mavericks clinched a spot in the conference tournament with Friday night’s hard-fought 7-6 victory over the Bobcats.

The tournament will be held Wednesday through May 24 in Troy, Ala.

UTA struggled at the plate Friday night. The Mavs were held to five hits and were able to only draw one walk.

Jacob Moreland pitched two innings of hitless relief for UTA.
