ARLINGTON – Brett Cecil just plain worked the Texas Rangers lineup Saturday with a brilliant four-hit shutout.
Alexi Ogando was serviceable for Texas (58-44) in the 3-0 loss, striking out six in 6 2/3 innings, but a rough sixth proved to be the difference.
Toronto (51-51) took the lead when Jose Bautista’s double to the gap in left-center scored Yunel Escobar from first.
Consecutive RBI doubles by Edwin Encarnacion and Travis Snider, which made it three for the inning, pushed Toronto’s lead to 3-0.
Texas’ closest chance came in the eighth when Craig Gentry singled and tagged up to second but Texas couldn’t convert.
Gentry had two of the Rangers’ four hits and one was a bunt.
The win was Cecil’s first career shutout in 54 games as he struck out seven and walked two.
