Bengals Make $10 Million Joe Burrow Decision Amid NFL Offseason
The Cincinnati Bengals have taken a key step to improve their financial flexibility ahead of the 2026 season. They have restructured quarterback Joe Burrow's contract to create $10 million in salary cap space.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the move on X, writing: "Bengals restructured the contract of QB Joe Burrow, per @RapSheet and me, creating $10 million in cap room. This move allows Cincy to operate without putting itself in a tough spot cap wise. This is due in part to the cash needed for the Dexter Lawrence trade."
The decision comes just months after Cincinnati acquired star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II in a blockbuster trade and signed him to a one-year, $28 million extension. That move strengthened one of the league's weakest defenses but created a significant cap challenge.

By converting part of Burrow's 2026 salary into a signing bonus, the Bengals lowered his cap hit from nearly $48 million to roughly $38 million. The restructure pushes some cap charges into future seasons but gives the front office room to maneuver this year.
The move reflects Cincinnati's urgency after a disappointing 6-11 campaign. Injuries limited Burrow to eight games in 2025, though he still threw 17 touchdowns with a 100.7 passer rating and earned a Pro Bowl selection.
The restructure makes sense. The Bengals entered the offseason with limited cap flexibility and several remaining needs. Creating additional space allows them to sign draft picks, add veteran depth, and manage in-season expenses without making more drastic moves.
The biggest takeaway is that Cincinnati remains fully committed to maximizing Burrow's championship window. The franchise already invested heavily in Lawrence to address a defense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL. Restructuring Burrow's contract is another sign the organization is prioritizing immediate competitiveness.
While the move increases future cap obligations, it provides much-needed breathing room today. For a team trying to rebound from three straight playoff misses, that flexibility could prove valuable.
