Knicks Fans Officially Warned About Poor Behavior During NBA Finals
New York Knicks fans acted poorly during and after Monday night's Game 3 NBA Finals loss. Not all Knicks fans acted out, of course, but hundreds of them were behaving inappropriately throughout the city. Five Knicks fans were arrested and 21 were taken into custody for improper behavior.
Throughout the city, Knicks fans were seen damaging public property, assaulting police officers and jumping San Antonio Spurs fans. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has issued an official "warning" to the fan base: this behavior will not be tolerated.
"New Yorkers are understandably passionate about the Knicks, and the overwhelming majority of fans watched the game last night in ways that were both safe and fun," a spokesperson for Mamdani said. "But the fights and other disruptive incidents - including assaults on police officers - in various parts of the city are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
Close to 7,000 fans attended a public watch party at Bryant Park on 42nd street, where things quickly devolved into craziness.
Several Spurs fans were assaulted by Knicks fans, as well. Several videos have gone viral on social media, showing fans in Spurs jerseys getting beaten up and jumped by Knicks fans.
"It's just not necessary. No one should be coming to the game and getting assaulted like that. It's not what we're promoting. It's not what we're playing for," Spurs guard Julian Champagnie said.
Father of Spurs star speaks out, too
Ron Harper, the father of Spurs guard Dylan Harper, spoke out on social media as well.
"I've to get this off my chest FANS we do not need to fight other fans that wear different jerseys to support their teams. It's not only in the @NBA but all major sports and college this is sad a mob jump on kids families parents let show some respect and go cheer the teams on…" he wrote on X.
It's well said.
Hopefully, all fans will listen heading into Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday evening.
