As a former educator, I have wondered when the State Board of Education would realize what causes the controversy over what is included in textbooks for the Texas schools. (See: “Better rules for textbook review,” Thursday)
No one person on the review board should ever have the power to include or exclude what is contained in a textbook. It was gratifying to see that this problem has been considered and addressed. Thank you, board, for tackling a thorny problem.
Education includes all possible theories without prejudice for one over another, and history books should include all historical facts. It is left up to good teachers to guide the students toward critical thinking with the goal of helping them to become future leaders who can solve the world’s problems. It is true that history repeats itself for those who don’t pay attention.
