Texas has a stark choice between Colin Allred and Ted Cruz. This is my decision | Opinion
Colin Allred is wrong for Texas
The Star-Telegram Editorial Board’s endorsement of Colin Allred (Oct. 20, 4C, “We endorse: Colin Allred can deliver for Texas in Senate”) mentions that he has campaigned as a bipartisan legislator, but that belies his past as a full-fledged liberal Democrat. He wants to be unburdened by what he has been.
The problem is that we know he has been a puppet for Nancy Pelosi, voting fully far left. He may be all right for Dallas County, but he is all wrong for Texas.

Look at Ted Cruz’s sorry record
Sen. Ted Cruz claims to fight for you and me, but his dismal voting record refutes this. Cruz puts grandstanding and publicity above Texans and critical legislation to help them. Fortunately, we have Colin Allred, who is focused on truly helping Texans. Examples include when he voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act.
These bills will provide thousands of great-paying jobs in construction, transportation, telecommunications, clean energy and computer chip industries, along with billions of dollars into the Texas economy.
Cruz is among those responsible for an extreme abortion ban and is proud of his role in destroying Roe v. Wade. Allred trusts women to make decisions about their own bodies. It’s an easy choice for Texas.

Fort Worth parents, step up
As a former student in schools other than the Fort Worth ISD, I’m appalled by students’ lack of progress in reading and math since the 1990s, when I moved here.
These children’s teachers need to partner with parents to practice math problems at home and to read for 30 minutes daily, the same amount of time children practice musical instruments to learn them. If their skills need to be reduced to basic levels, then flash cards can be used.
Reading and math problems aren’t mountains that can’t be conquered, but temporary impediments that, once resolved, will lead to successful academic careers and well-paying employment opportunities.
All of our children are worth extra work. Let’s provide it for them.

Border problems a tragedy
It sickens me to see what President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have done to our southern border. No one knows for sure how many people are in the country illegally, but an estimate of 10 million to 15 million is probably realistic. Many communities are overwhelmed.
We have no idea who these people are or their intentions, but we recently observed another anniversary of 9/11, so that makes one contemplate the possibilities.
As an Air Force aviator, now retired, I risked my life countless times flying during Vietnam and Desert Storm. And this is the thanks I get from the Biden administration?

The US needs immigrant workers
How dare Donald Trump call the United States the garbage can of the world? How dare Trump call immigrants who come to work and raise families horrible names? Latin American countries especially have blessed us with hardworking immigrants who bring their many talents to us.
Let’s be honest, folks: Who would plant, care for and harvest fruits and vegetables for us if the immigrants didn’t? I am grateful for these good workers.
Have a backbone and tell Trump that enough is enough.
