No one should look here for an opinion opposing the reasonable exercise of free speech, but we’ll be the first to agree that some such exercises are simply dumb.

Case in point: The gun rights group Come and Take It Texas has announced plans for a fake mass shooting demonstration Saturday near the University of Texas at Austin.

It’s a protest against gun-free zones, which public universities can designate before a new state law takes effect Aug. 1 allowing license holders to carry concealed guns on campus.

A special UT task force recommended Thursday that guns not be allowed in dormitories but did not call for banning guns in classrooms as faculty members have vocally advocated.

Saturday’s event, presumably aimed at influencing a decision by campus President Gregory Fenves on the matter, will feature fake guns, fake blood and fake sounds of gun shots.

With so much real violence around us, who needs the fake stuff to imagine how horrible it is?
