A woman known for raising camels here was killed Saturday, along with her neighbor.
Peggye McNair, 72, and Mark Mere, 53, were found in a fenced area in the 4200 block of Farm Road 367, the Wichita County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Both had been trampled and were dead when deputies arrived, said Deputy Melvin Joiner, a spokesman for the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office.
Joiner said the neighbor was trying to break ice in the camels’ water trough when a male camel that was in rut attacked him. As McNair tried to close the gate he attacked her as well.

Rut occurs during mating season and can make animals aggressive.
The bodies were sent to Tarrant County for autopsy.
McNair, a former vice president of American National Bank in Wichita Falls, operated Camel Kisses Ranch, which often opened for children to see the camels. The male camel was put down at the family’s request.
