Man spills jug of urine to hide smell of drugs during checkpoint in TX, feds say
A 50-year-old man was sentenced to prison after officials said he used urine to try and cover up the smell of drugs in Texas.
On Nov. 1, the man was driving a semi cab when he came across a Sarita Border Patrol checkpoint, according to a Sept. 12 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
A K-9 alerted to the vehicle and the man was asked to move to a secondary station for inspection, according to a criminal complaint.
Officials said the man was being difficult and delayed getting out of the semi cab. He then spilled a jug of urine all over the cab area, the complaint said.
The urine smell was “extremely potent” and wasn’t noticed during the initial checkpoint, according to the complaint. Authorities said he poured the urine to try masking the smell of drugs.
The man was on his phone during the inspection and was heard saying the agents were “planting something inside the vehicle,” officials said.
After searching the vehicle, investigators found 22 bundles of cocaine hidden in a tool box under the bed in the cab, the complaint said. The cocaine was in a trash bag in a cardboard box with chili powder, which is typically used to try and mask the smell of drugs, officials said.
The man pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute, prosecutors said. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
