Winter commencements are coming up for many area universities including two this weekend in North Texas, but at least one this year included a canine graduate, complete with cap and gown.
KRIS-TV reported that service dog Titan, a doberman-Labrador mix, walked Dec. 9 with his owner, Army veteran Matthew Walbeck, 40, at Texas A&M-Kingsville, near Corpus Christi.
Walbeck, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving two tours in Bosnia, had Titan at his side through his studies. When Walbeck has an anxiety attack, Titan puts his head on his lap to comfort him, the station reported.
Walbeck told KRIS-TV he hopes his story will inspire others: “Just being able to accomplish this, hopefully show other veterans that you can do it. It may be tough, but you can do it.”
Winter commencements still to come in North Texas include those at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University this weekend.
