In 100 words or less, please explain how your background, skills and experience make you the best qualified candidate for this office.

I am most qualified for this office because at this moment the school district needs a knowledgeable and trusted advocate for all stakeholders of the Kennedale ISD community. The KISD community needs a board member who will work to create a climate of trust, innovation, and accountability between the board and KISD community. Most important, and directly linked to my skills, is to ensure instruction and student learning are at the forefront of the decisions done on the school board. Lastly, my skill sets is suited to develop positive, meaningful, and responsible relationships with parents, teachers, and students.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

1. 1. The school board currently has multiple members in place who do not have any children/grandchildren who are students receiving current instruction in KISD. I have two students in the school district now.

2. 2. No three-to-five year strategic plan in writing for the district. As a lifelong educator, I am ideally suited to work on a board who crafts this type of plan for a school district.

3. 3. Longevity has its place on a school board, but at this time in the district a fresh perspective is needed for the school district to flourish academically in the coming years.

I have more than 15 years of proven servant leadership in the KISD community. I've worked diligently for our schools, and have established great working relationships with all area leadership while achieving proven results.

During my tenure we have developed educators, programs, and facilities among the best in class for a 4A district. The recent record of success in KISD speaks volumes about our progress. Families, including educators, move to KISD for our schools.

We have intentional goals and a resolute will to continue developing many improved opportunities for our students. We’re providing the sky for our learners to soar.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

Standardized testing – Accountability matters, but there must be changes. I’m working to unify school leaders and legislators to stop high stakes testing. Educators should play a key role in developing solutions.

School funding - The court has ruled that current methods of funding are unconstitutional. I support legislation aimed to make funding adequate and equitable.

Vouchers - Recipients of public school funds through vouchers should be held to the same standards as those attending public schools. Public schools are held to increasingly difficult standards for educating all students regardless of challenges while private schools are only accepting the select students.

My diverse background and work experience gives me the ability to understand the challenges that the current Board of Trustees face. I have experience with large budgets, organizational improvements, legislative process and action, and construction processes. I have a passion for education and our community. I believe both are equally important to ensure that MISD reaches its’ full potential.

1. Growth in the district and community

2. Ensuring that our current buildings and structures continue to be adequate and safe for use by our students

3. Maintaining the reputation as a desire workplace for educators and continuing to draw dedicated and passionate educators to our district

While all these issues are important, the tax dollars entrusted to the school district should always have the conscience of any board member in order to make sound fiscal decisions, especially when prioritizing issues that will have a lasting impact on the students, faculty and staff of MISD.

In 100 words or less, please explain how your background, skills and experience make you the best qualified candidate for this office.

I have almost 10 years of management experience and for 5 years I ran my own graphics and apparel business. With both my management experience and my volunteer experience, I have learned how to effectively and efficiently manage budgets and to prioritize them. PTA has also given me the experience needed to learn compromise and to work with others to find solutions. Perhaps the most important thing to know is my willingness to give of my time. I realize that the school board works with complex issues that require time and dedication. There are often issues that require in depth research on the part of its members and I am willing and able to take the time required to serve the residents of Mansfield.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

1) School funding has always been a serious issue for Mansfield and across the state of Texas. We must try to find creative ways to solve this issue and not only that rally our citizens to drive change on the state level.

2) There is growing frustration in the district at the secondary level with regards to scheduling, homework, testing and Ben Barber. It is a complex issue and I believe there are many facets to the problem. The problem may require a unique solution.

3) Communication is a problem in the district. There has got to be a better effort at all levels to get information out to parents. In return parents must be encouraged to be active participants in what is going on with their children.

In 100 words or less, please explain how your background, skills and experience make you the best qualified candidate for this office.

I have been a small business owner for 20 years. The responsibilities of a city council member in a small town are similar to those of an entrepreneur. In both situations you are restricted by money and resources while trying to do what is best for your customers and constituents. Constant communication is required to give confidence in your ability for both responsibilities. Other commonalities include the ability to set and maintain long term goals while being short term flexible. Both roles require the ability to listen, observe, and speak with a strong voice.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

Three issues presently facing the city of Kennedale include a limited budget, rapidly expanding population, and future infrastructural commitments. A limited budget can be eased by leveraging tax dollars with other government entities. Expanding populations require infrastructure improvement in the south part of Kennedale which can be funded using tax increment refinancing zone to leverage future tax bases. Future expenses can be mitigated through shared responsibility with state and county resources by expanding cooperative efforts with County Commissioner, Andy Nguyen, and State Representatives.

Growth, economic development and city services. All three are best managed by having a city team that is focused on high growth standards, has a forward thinking perspective on economic development and prioritizes budget resources to deliver the highest return on shareholder value to citizens in the form of property valuation, city services and public safety. Public safety, positive economic growth (business & personal property) and maximizing citizen shareholder value in the form of city services and personal property valuation. Continued road and utility build-out, economic incentivization, public/private partnerships, high but fair development standards and strategic development prioritization.

I think one of the most critical problems that we have in this community, like any other community, is government transparency. Only through increasing this transparency can we begin to allocate funding more properly to give the people of Mansfield a better service at a lower cost.

Having the privilege to serve the citizens of Mansfield since 2006, I have the "on the job" experience to help Mansfield grow over the next three years. While other cities across the US were experiencing significant downturns during the economic downturn, Mansfield continued to thrive. I believe part of that success goes to the professional management of our City Manager and staff, along with the leadership that our council has shown. I understand our pressing needs and the plans to achieve our goals. Maintaining our momentum is key to positive and quality growth.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

The success Mansfield has achieved also brings with it additional growing pains. Planning for needed infrastructure and city support services to maintain our quality of life are important. Financing these needs and executing a plan of development is a balancing act. Maintaining and increasing Public Safety, expanding our roads and infrastructure, and facilitating economic growth are our three main objectives. All of these priorities can be achieved through effective planning and budgeting. There are only so many tax dollars to go around and a phased approach to these is the best approach.

I have served 23+ years in the military, traveling and living in a variety of areas with a lot of different cultures and walks of life. I have been in a leadership position since 1997. I believe in voicing my opinion. I love fighting for people who can’t fight for themselves.

I think the first problem is the oil drilling that some people want and others don’t. I don’t have a solution for this right now because; I am at a split on this. Only because, I believe in more jobs for the city but at the cost of people getting sick is not good either. The second problem is getting more youth facilities here in Mansfield. The youth is the future of this city and if we want our youth to go to college and come back to Mansfield, we are going to have to appeal to them.

Prior to retiring and moving to Pelican Bay I owned/operated GAO Systems which I began in 1993 in Mansfield, TX. This business dealt in sales, service & recycling of computer systems. My prior years of employment were principally in management positions in the computer information systems areas within various major national retail companies. The strengths that I developed over these years in business management lends itself quite well to many of the aspects of city management, especially in budgetary, maintenance, equipment & personnel issues.

In 100 words or less, please outline the three most critical problems facing the public office you are seeking and the solutions you propose to address them.

First, increase our revenue base by attracting new residents. We are addressing that by cleaning up existing properties through better code compliance, improving our police & fire protection services and identifying ways to better our city.

Secondly, improve our city infrastructure. We are replacing old water lines, installing fire hydrants and gradually improving our streets.

Third is financial constraints. We have balanced our budget every year I have been on the council. We have developed a city website, providing complete openness of our city information.

My goal is to continue working with the present mayor & council on these tasks.
