Medical examiner identifies man fatally shot by Fort Worth police

A man shot to death by Fort Worth police Saturday afternoon was identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office Sunday as 33-year-old Joseph Elliott of Fort Worth.

Elliott was pronounced dead on arrival at John Peter Smith Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police responded to a call for an investigation just before 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the 5600 block of East Lancaster Avenue and found the man covered in blood, said officer Daniel Segura, a police department spokesman, said.

After officers made contact, the man “presented a weapon (a sharp object of some kind) and attacked the officers,” Segura said. The officers opened fire, striking the man, who was taken to the nearest hospital, Segura said.

Elliott died of “multiple gunshot wounds,” according to the medical examiner’s office.

The police department’s major case unit is investigating, Segura said. He would not say whether the officer has been suspended.
