Tire and grass fire at Silver Creek Materials in Fort Worth spreads smoke for miles

An outdoor fire on the property of a recycling facility in far west Fort Worth on Sunday spread to an “extremely large pile of tires” and spewed dark smoke that could be seen in the air for miles.

The call initially came in to the Fort Worth Fire Department for a large grass and brush fire at Silver Creek Materials, in the 2200 block of Silver Creek Road.

When firefighters arrived, they found that a large pile of mulch, pallets and other materials discarded by residents had caught fire, the Fire Department said in a news release.

The fire was about a mile away from the main road. “This posed a challenge for crews to bring enough water in to battle the blaze,” the department said. “While there was water already on the property, firefighters needed a larger volume to ensure they had impact on the fire.”

While fire crews connected about 7,000 feet of supply lines, strong winds spread the flames into the pile of tires and other combustible materials, according to the news release.

Crews were on the scene until just after 6 a.m. Monday.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, the department said.

No structures were damaged by the blaze. Its cause is under investigation.

Firefighters from Lake Worth, Saginaw, River Oaks, Sansom Park, Azle, White Settlement, Benbrook and the Tarrant County Fire Marshal’s Office helped battled the fire.
