Weatherford police were working a fatal accident on the interstate that left one person dead and seven people hospitalized Friday afternoon.
An 18-wheeler crashed into multiple cars and overturned on eastbound I-20 at about 3:42 p.m near the Cleburne Highway exit.
Weatherford police said the driver of a semi-truck was heading east on I-20 and had just gone under the bridge at the 408 mile marker, where traffic was backed up. The driver did not slow down in time and crashed into the back of an SUV in the left lane.
The collision pushed the SUV into a passenger car in front of it. That car spun and hit a pickup truck in front of it. Police believe the semi also hit the pickup truck.
The semi slid toward the median and rolled over onto its driver side after colliding with the center median cable system. The truck’s cargo — plastic Gatorade bottles —spilled onto the interstate.
The driver of the passenger car died from the crash. She was a 44-year-old woman whose identity had not been released as of 9 p.m. Friday night.
Seven other people in the crash were taken to various hospitals; their conditions were unknown Friday night.
Two other people were treated and released at the scene.
The accident investigation was ongoing. Emergency personnel were still working to clear the accident scene as of 7:30 p.m. Friday.
At about 5 p.m., the Department of Public Safety urged people to avoid the area due to the crash, saying they expected significant traffic delays on both eastbound and westbound I-20 for several hours.
