Cedar Hill football coach arrested in Tarrant County

The head football coach at Cedar Hill High School, whose team won a state championship in December, was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to Tarrant County Jail records.

Joe Newton McGuire, 43, was booked into the jail at 4:40 a.m. Friday. He is known as Joey McGuire.

A state trooper pulled McGuire over on the Chisholm Trail Parkway, said Terry Grisham, a spokesman for the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department.

The trooper, who was on routine patrol on Chisholm Trail Parkway near Montgomery Street, stopped a Chevrolet pickup after 3 a.m. because it was speeding, said trooper Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Further information, such as why the trooper thought McGuire was intoxicated, was not available Friday.

McGuire was released on bail and reported the arrest to school officials.

“We are still in the process of gathering information and will handle any discipline internally and take appropriate action,” Sabreana Smith, spokeswoman for the Cedar Hill school district, said in an email.

“Coach McGuire is aware of the impact this will have on the CHISD community, Cedar Hill High School and the football team he coaches. He will be addressing his matter internally within the football program and we ask that you respect his request for privacy during this time.”

McGuire’s Cedar Hill teams have won three University Interscholastic League titles, most recently in December in Class 6A Division II. Other teams won titles in Class 5A (now 6A) in 2013 and 2006.
