Cedar Hill middle school teacher arrested in Fort Worth double slaying

A Cedar Hill middle school teacher was arrested Monday in connection with the double slaying of two men Sunday in Fort Worth.

Cary Joseph Heath, 35, was arrested Monday afternoon on a capital murder warrant at Permenter Middle School in Cedar Hill, where he teaches science to eighth-graders.

He was being booked into jail Monday evening. Bond on the warrant was set at $1 million.

Homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman declined to discuss the suspected motive behind the slaying. District officials said Monday night that Heath has been placed on administrative leave.

The shooting occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Buffalo Springs Drive in far south Fort Worth. Records show Heath lives in the 900 block of Buffalo Springs.

A woman called 911, reporting that multiple shots had been fired and that she knew at least one of the victims.

When officers arrived, they found two men dead on the driveway.

The names of the victims had not been released by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office as of Monday night, but a GoFundMe page and other social media postings identified them as Daniel Haros and his best friend, Phillip Garcia.

Relatives of the two men could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Police had initially detained another man for questioning in the case, but he was not arrested.

According to his profile on the Cedar Hill school district website, Heath was a first-year teacher at Permenter and had served in the Air Force for the last 13 years. During his time in the military, he received a degree in physical education and science, his profile states.

“I am excited to be here at Permenter to provide structure and discipline for your student,” he wrote. “My goal as an educator is to provide a quality education while focusing on success in our global marketplace.”

Parker County court records show Heath pleaded guilty in August 1999 to misdemeanor criminal mischief.
