Head-on collision south of Fort Worth kills two men

Two men died Monday after a head-on collision south of Fort Worth near Chisolm Park Trailway.

William Hewson, 55, of Crowley died at the scene in the 4200 block of West Farm Road 1187; Matthew Aikin, 47, of Godley, died at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the crash, which happened about 4:30 p.m. Because there were few witnesses, the cause will not be officially determined until the investigation is complete, said Terry Grisham, Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Grisham said based on evidence at the scene, Hewson was in a Chevy pickup traveling eastbound on Farm Road 1187 and Aiken was driving a GMC Yukon westbound when the two collided. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.

“It is difficult to tell at this point who came into each other’s lane,” Grisham said.

The impact caused a gasoline leak resulting in a brief fire, making it difficult for emergency personnel to extract the victims, who were trapped inside the burning vehicles, the spokesman said.

Hewson died at the scene, and Aiken was taken by air ambulance to the hospital, where he died later. The medical examiner will determine whether fire played a role in either death.
