Woman struck, killed by SUV driver in Oak Cliff shopping center

An SUV driver suspected of hitting and killing a woman in a shopping center parking lot Sunday night was chased down and caught by a witness as he tried to run away, police say.

Juan Carlos Velasquez, 47, was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid — causing death, authorities say.

Witnesses told police that Velasquez was traveling in reverse at high speed in the 3200 block of Dawes Drive at the Westmoreland Heights Shopping Center in Oak Cliff when the SUV fishtailed and struck the unidentified woman, then hit another vehicle.

He got out of the SUV, looked at the victim under it, and then tried to flee, according to a Dallas police statement.

At least one witness saw Velasquez running away and chased him, police said. The witness caught him and held him until police arrived and made the arrest.

The woman was apparently doing laundry with her husband and young child and was heading back to get more clothes out of her car when she was hit, according to Fox 4 News.

No further details have been released.
