A 10-year-old Colleyville girl was in a hospital Sunday after her father accidentally shot her the night before while showing his gun, authorities reported.

Steven Johnson, 53, was showing his handgun to friends at his home Saturday night when it went off and a bullet went through the wall and struck his daughter, city spokeswoman Mona Gandy said. The home is in the 1600 block of Douglass Avenue.

The girl’s mother took her to Baylor Emergency Medical Center at Colleyville, and police were called just before midnight, Gandy said.

The girl was later flown to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Gandy said she could not disclose the child’s condition or name, and the hospital could not supply a condition without a name.

Johnson is in the Keller Jail facing charges of injury to a child.

“From the circumstances officers observed at the house, they felt like they had probable cause to make an arrest for injury to a child,” Gandy said.

She could not say whether the couple has other children who were in the home.
