Elderly couple dead in apparent murder-suicide in Keller, police say

An elderly couple were found fatally shot inside their room at a Keller assisted living center Wednesday morning in what police believe was a murder-suicide.

Police were called to the Whitley Place assisted living facility at 800 Whitley Road about 6:40 a.m. on a report of a shooting.

“The male usually gets up in the morning to go have coffee. He didn’t get up and follow his routine, so one of the workers went in there to check on him, and that’s when she found them laying in the bed, saw a gun and saw blood,” said Lt. Brenda Slovak, a Keller police spokeswoman.

Slovak said investigators believe the man shot his wife with a .22-caliber revolver before turning the gun on himself.

“The husband shot the wife in the left temple and then put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger,” she said.

The couple were identified late Wednesday morning as Joe and Georgianne Woolum, both 90.

The Woolums had lived at the facility since June 2013, Slovak said.

“We don’t know where the gun came from. We’ve got to talk to the family,” Slovak said. “It looks like she may have had some medical issues. There are no reports of domestic violence.”

Slovak said the couple had last been spoken to about 5 or 6 p.m. Tuesday. She said no one reported hearing gunshots before the bodies were discovered Wednesday morning.
