Driver identified in fatal Fort Worth wreck

Officials identified a driver killed in a weekend wreck on an Interstate 35W service road as Daniel Ortega of Arlington, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website on Monday.

Ortega and his passenger, Manuel Alvarez, 20, of Fort Worth, died at the scene of the Saturday afternoon crash, authorities said.

Police were dispatched at 1 p.m. Saturday to a major accident in the South Freeway service road at East Felix Street, said police said.

Eight vehicles were involved in the wreck on the southbound service road, police said.

Ortega, Alvarez and a third man were in a maroon Toyota Avalon that lost control and hit the back of a Chevrolet pickup, police said. Ortega was driving while Alvarez and another man were passengers in the Toyota, authorities said. The third man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses told police that the Toyota was traveling at a high speed. Other injuries were reported, but none are believed to be life-threatening, police said.
