Missing autistic Bedford man found safe

A missing Bedford man with Asperger’s syndrome was found safe in Sunnyvale on Monday afternoon by a deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, authorities said Tuesday.

Luis “Luigi” Araud, 28, identified himself to the deputy and said he wanted to go home, Bedford police said in a news release.

His family drove to Sunnyvale — near Mesquite, about 40 miles east of Bedford — and picked him up, police Lt. David Smith said Tuesday.

Asperger’s syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder characterized by social impairment and communication difficulties, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Investigators say Araud walked away from his home Nov. 9 after an argument with his parents.

He was seen Nov. 11 in Irving near Belt Line Road and Texas 114 , but he ran away from Irving police, authorities said.

Araud spoke with officers for a few minutes but would not identify himself, police said.

The officers did not realize that Araud was missing until they saw news reports later that day, authorities said.
