Man, 25, sentenced to life in prison for killing his infant son

A 25-year-old man with a history of child abuse was sentenced to life in prison this week for killing his 16-day-old son.

Armando A. Hernandez pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of causing serious bodily injury to a child. The jury took less than an hour on Wednesday to sentence him to life in prison, according to a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney’s office.

Hernandez was watching his newborn son, Giovanni, and two other young children on July 6, 2012, while his girlfriend and her mother went shopping. About 20 minutes after the women left, Hernandez called relatives and told them that Giovanni was not breathing. And then Hernandez called 911, the release said.

The baby died at Cook Children’s Medical Center. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head.

During the trial, Tarrant County prosecutors Melinda Westmoreland and Dale Smith presented evidence that Hernandez had pled guilty previously to abusing a former girlfriend’s 14-month-old son and was sentenced to three years in prison. That child had multiple bone fractures but survived.
