Dallas-area detectives conclude man’s killing was not in self-defense, arrest suspect

A man who was among several people who arrived early Wednesday at a Garland house intending to fight was shot to death by the owner of the house, police alleged.

Using a handgun, Mariano Castillo, 43, shot Isaac Velasco about 4 a.m., Garland police said.

Castillo lives in the 100 block of Lake Drive, and police found Velasco, 28, at a shopping center in the 1500 block of South First Street.

A police spokesman did not say where Velasco, who lived in Dallas, was when he was shot. He was pronounced dead at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.

Based on evidence and witness statements, detectives do not believe the killing was in self-defense, a police spokesman said. Castillo was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held in the Garland Jail.
