Kangaroos' shutout reaches 25 innings before Lamar scores

Special to the Weatherford Star-Telegram

The Weatherford Kangaroos extended their shutout streak to 25 innings before finally giving up a run to Arlington Lamar.

The Kangaroos posted three consecutive shutouts. Those, along with their recent 5-4 victory against Lamar, improved Weatherford to 4-2 in District 4-6A (13-7 overall). They entered play this week a game behind Paschal, whom they play in Fort Worth Tuesday (April 12).

Earlier in the week, the Kangaroos disposed of Arlington Sam Houston 12-0 as Mason Hilton and Kade Spooner combined to pitch a three-hitter.

"Our pitchers have done a great job of going at the hitters and making them put the ball in play," said first-year Kangaroos coach Jason Lee. "Our defense has played very well.

"We talk a lot about playing the game one pitch at a time and trying to win every pitch. I think that helps us stay in the moment and not look ahead or dwell in the past."

Spencer Hynes had five hits during the week, including three doubles. His last double drove home Nick Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Lamar.

BEARCATS SPLIT GREAT PITCHING PERFORMANCES

The Aledo Bearcats (13-7, 4-2 in District 8-5A) got a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts from pitcher Kannon Brown in a 5-0 win over Burleson. That was followed by a two-hitter from Kody Bradford in a yeoman effort as the Bearcats fell 1-0 at district co-leader Granbury.

The Bearcats, who have reached the past two state tournaments (winning a 4A title in 2014), entered this week alone in third place in district, a game behind Granbury and Burleson Centennial, the latter to whom they travel next Tuesday.

ALBRITTON'S BIG WEEK LEADS EAGLES TO TWO WINS

Travis Albritton had five hits as the Brock Eagles (12-4, 6-0 in District 11-3A) won a pair of league games in convincing fashion. He had three hits with a triple and RBI in an 11-1 win over Rio Vista, followed by two hits and a pair of RBI in an 11-0 win over Millsap (3-12, 2-4).

PEASTER WINS TWICE ON STRONG PITCHING

The Greyhounds (7-8, 3-3 in District 11-3A) got 10 strikeouts in seven innings from Evan Hafley in a 5-1 victory against Hillsboro. That was followed by Matthew Grimes and Devin Alvey combining for a five-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 whitewashing of Keene.
