Five games into the District 4-6A basketball season and the Weatherford Lady Kangaroos are doing more than battling for a playoff berth. They're in the mix for a district championship.

Last Friday's 46-42 victory at Arlington Martin left the Lady Kangaroos (19-4 overall) with a 4-1 district record. They share the top spot in the league with Arlington Lamar and North Crowley, with Martin and Arlington Bowie a game back.

Maddie Dorris led the Lady Roos with 20 points in the win over Martin.

Balanced scoring has been a strong part of the Lady Kangaroos' success. For example, the win over Martin came on the heels of a 61-43 victory against Paschal in which Gracie Ferguson led with 18 points. Anna Jefferson-Polk and Dorris each added a dozen points.

In the game before, a 50-40 win over Arlington, Dorris scored 14, Jefferson-Polk added 11, and Vasha Moore scored 10.

"My Big Four are balanced," said Weatherford coach Darryn Shearmire.
