Shortly after Aledo captured its fifth state football championship in six years, the interim status was removed from coach Steve Wood’s title.

Effective immediately, Wood is “officially” head football coach for Aledo High School.

Wood served as interim head football coach since July 31 when former head coach and Athletic Director Tim Buchanan became the district’s full-time athletic director.

Previously, Wood had been an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Bearcats since 2002. He coached each of the Aledo High School teams that achieved state championship titles in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. The Bearcats were named 5A Division I State Champs Dec. 20, bringing home the state trophy for the fifth time in six years.

Before joining Aledo ISD, Wood served as the defensive coordinator for Mesquite Poteet High School. He has also coached at Boswell, Dobie and Calhoun high schools.

Dr. Derek Citty, Aledo ISD Superintendent, said Wood’s successful career of 33 years will remain an asset for the Bearcats.

“With an amazing 49-45 win over the Temple Wildcats...Coach Wood has continued to prove his experience and coaching abilities are a winning combination for Aledo,” Citty said. “I have complete confidence that his unrelenting spirit will positively impact the tradition of excellence in the Bearcat football program.”
