Aledo Middle School seventh-grader Janessa Payne qualified for the 2014 NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Cowboys Team Championship competition after an “exceptional performance” in the sectional competition and competed at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Saturday for a chance to move on to the next round.
Payne says the competition involves measurement, accuracy and distance. She has been practicing for three years after her mother initially suggested the idea.
“I’m really excited about this weekend because if I win, I get to go to the AFC and NFC championship games,” she said.
First-place finishers were introduced Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys game, and will have their scores submitted to the NFL. Once all 32 NFL teams have completed their PP&K Team Championships, the scores will be ranked. Then, the Top Four finishers in each age group will advance to the PP&K National Championship to be held at an NFL Playoff game in January 2015.
