Coming off a short week, the Kangaroos were looking to rebound from their first loss of the season as they took on Paschal Thursday night in Fort Worth.
Unfortunately for Weatherford, a late rally fell short in overtime as the Panthers were able to take advantage of some controversial calls by the referees and came away with a 52-45 win in the District 4-6A contest.
This week, the Roos (3-2, 0-2) play host to Arlington Martin on Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Kangaroo Stadium.
On Thursday against Paschal, Cameron Hood sent the game to overtime for Weatherford with a 28-yard field goal as time expired in regulation and the Kangaroos had the ball to start the overtime.
Weatherford faced a fourth-and-1 from the Paschal 16, but the Panthers’ defense stuffed quarterback Bryce Burks for no gain.
Fort Worth Paschal quarterback/receiver Dylan Thomas hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from William Floyd and kicker Christian Vasquez added the final extra point — even after a 15-yard excessive celebration penalty — after game officials called the teams back on the field. The PAT play was needed because the point differentials can determine playoff spots.
The teams traded scores throughout the game. Floyd led the Panthers in passing with 195 yards on 10 completions. In addition to the game-winner, Floyd tossed a 90-yard scoring pass to Kaylon Geiger to give Paschal a 34-28 lead with 10:20 left in the fourth quarter.
Thirty-four points were scored in the fourth quarter, including two touchdown passes by Burks, who finished the game with 31 completion in 50 attempts for 521 yards.
Thomas, who scored the game-winner for Paschal (2-3, 1-1), rushed for 164 yards and two scores and threw for 176 more and three more scores, playing the majority of his time at quarterback.
