The Weatherford College rodeo team had a big weekend at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, bringing home a share of the Men’s All-Around Title, two event championships and three second place finishes while 15 WC contestants qualified for the finals on Saturday night.
Weatherford native Seth Cooke tied for the Men’s All-Around title. Cooke won first place in steer wrestling and fourth in team roping to take home the honor, his second such title in his college career.
Casey Tew also brought home an event title belt buckle, winning the team roping championship along with WC alumnus Landon Williams from Tarleton State. The duo won both rounds in Alpine and now lead the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association standings after two rodeos.
Aaron Macy teamed up with Ranger’s Wesley Thorpe to win second place in both rounds for the reserve title in team roping, and Landon Duncan won second in tie down roping and fourth place in team roping with Cooke.
The WC men finished with 605 points, the second-highest point total in school history. Tarleton won the men’s division with 730 points.
Freshman cowgirl Aspyn Dent won second place in goat tying. She posted a 6.8 second run to with the first round and came back with an 8.4 for the reserve title.
Kody Mahaffey finished seventh in steer wrestling. WC had four in the team roping top 10: Garret Busby (5th), Pace Blanchard (6th), Adam Jensen (8th) and Tyler Gifford (9th). Brooke Sully finished 9th in breakaway roping.
The WC team traveled to the Vernon College Rodeo over the weekend. Results weren’t available at press time.
