Girls basketball practices begin

University Interscholastic League girls basketball teams around the state will hold their first practices of the 2016-17 season Wednesday (Oct. 19). The first day for scrimmages is Oct. 29, and the first games can be played Nov. 4.

Boys will begin practices Oct. 26 with first scrimmages Nov. 5 and first games Nov. 11.

Last season, all six area public school girls teams reached the playoffs, along with four of the six boys teams:

Brock, 34-5, Class 3A state runners-up.

Aledo, 29-9, 5A Region I semifinals.

Weatherford, 26-8, 6A area (second) round.

Peaster, 20-11, 3A area round.

Millsap, 11-14, 3A bi-district.

Poolville, 19-13, 2A bi-district.

Boys

Peaster, 26-7, 3A Region II quarterfinals.

Poolville, 15-16, 2A area round.

Brock, 24-12, 3A bi-district.

Weatherford, 14-17, 6A bi-district.

Millsap, 7-24.

Aledo, 6-23.

WC HOOPS TEAMS TO HOLD SCRIMMAGES

Both Weatherford College Coyotes and Lady Coyotes basketball teams will play scrimmages in the next week.

The Coyotes will host Trinity Valley in a scrimmage Friday (Oct. 21) at 1 p.m. The Lady Coyotes will travel to Texas Woman's University in Denton Monday (Oct. 24) for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

The regular season begins Nov. 1 when the women’s team hosts Angelina at 2 p.m. The men open with CYM (Creating Young Minds) on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m.

The Coyotes are coming off a 10-19 overall season with a 3-9 record in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference. They return three sophomores.

The Lady Coyotes were 5-22 and 2-12 in conference. They return two sophomores.

JUNIOR LEAGUE BASKETBALL REGISTRATION

Tryouts for Junior League Basketball in Weatherford are upcoming. The first session is Oct. 29 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Couts Memorial United Methodist Church and Nov. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at North Side Baptist Church.

NTHSRA AREA LEADERS

Kaelee Brown of Aledo is one of six area competitors ranked in the top five in their respective events in the North Texas High School Rodeo Association. She has 209 points and is second in pole bending. Maggie Pytlik of Weatherford is fourth in that event with 185.

Also from Aledo, Kaitlynn Kasterke is second in the Rookie Cowgirl standings with 154 points. Rylee Wells of Peaster is fifth with 110.

Luke Williams of Brock has 155 points for fourth in team roping-heading and is third in the Rookie Cowboy standings.

Brown is fourth in ride-up goat tying with 177 points and Lukas Loren of Weatherford is fifth in chute dogging at 106.

PCTA JUNIOR CLINIC

The next Parker County Tennis Association Junior Clinic is scheduled for Nov. 12 from 9-10:30 a.m.

The courts are on Charles Street, near the Weatherford Little League fields.

WEATHERFORD COLLEGE FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 16th Annual Weatherford College Foundation Golf Tournament will be Thursday (Oct. 20) at Canyon West Golf Club. Registration and lunch is at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Entry fee is $85 per person or $325 for a four-person team. This includes lunch, green fees, cart, a gift, and a hamburger dinner cooked by the WC campus police.

Players can also purchase a mulligan package with two mulligans and two raffle tickets for items such as sporting goods, electronics, restaurant certificates, and more.

BROCK HOOPS GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 2016 Brock Hoops Golf Scramble is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30 at Canyon West Golf Course. The four-person, best-ball scramble will feature a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Check-in and registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Entry fee is $400 per team and includes range ball, cart fee, lunch and a goodie bag. Mulligans are available for three for $5, with a maximum of 12 per team.

Hole sponsorships are also available for $250. There will also be contests for closes to the pin, longest drive, a 50/50 hole, and a putting contest.

Funds raised will be used toward locker room renovations, basketball equipment and equipment storage for the Brock boys and girls basketball programs for grades 7-12.
