The City of Weatherford is accepting applications for city officer positions in the city secretary’s office at City Hall, located at 303 Palo Pinto St.
Citizens choosing to run for office must complete and file an application for place on the ballot by 5 p.m., Feb. 27. Positions available for election are City Council Place 3 and 4, along with election for Mayor. No filing fee is required. City Council Place 3 and 4 are three- year terms while the Mayor position is a one-year term. Incumbents include Council Member Place 3 Waymon Hamilton, Council Member Place 4 Craig Swancy and Mayor Dennis Hooks.
Each person who becomes a candidate for mayor or council member shall meet the following qualifications: be at least 21 years of age, be a citizen of the United States, be a qualified voter of the city, reside and have resided for at least 12 months preceding the election within the corporate limits of the city. No candidate may file for more than one office or position number per election and no employee of the city shall continue in such position after becoming a candidate for an elective office.
“Local elections do not usually receive the same attention as those for state and federal elections but they are important,” Assistant City Manager Sharon Hayes said. “City government is the level closest to the people and provides services that directly impact citizens every day. Citizen involvement is important to making government work. Knowing about the issues, registering to vote and voting in all elections is the best way to become involved.”
