Vandagriff Elementary fourth-grader Maddy Flora learned this week that the poster she entered in the 12th annual national Veterans Day Poster and Poem contest placed first in the nation among third- and fourth-grade student entries. She received a certificate of recognition along with a $100 gift card to Discovery Kids. The school also received a plaque in her honor, which will be displayed in the Vandagriff lobby.
Vandagriff Principal Stephanie Adams and Music Teacher Phillis Bunch offered the project to students at Vandagriff. The poems and posters were to show or tell how they would thank a veteran this holiday season. Maddy’s art depicted emblems of branches of the armed forces on the background of an American flag. She also included a big note of thanks.
The Paralyzed Veterans of America reported a record number of entries from across the country this year. PVA says these contests deepen students’ understanding of the importance of honoring and thanking our nation’s veterans.
All the entries will be shared with veterans in VA hospitals and at Paralyzed Veterans Chapters across the nation.
