The Weatherford Police Department will utilize grant funding from the Texas Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Program to pay overtime salaries for officers to conduct Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) activities. STEP activities are geared to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road during holiday periods as well as enforce posted speed limits. Additional enforcement began Oct. 23 and will last until Nov 2.
Recent speed surveys conducted in the 900 block of Palo Pinto Street indicated that only 36 percent of drivers were abiding by posted speed limits. In the 700 block of Fort Worth Highway, surveys showed that a mere 6 percent of drivers were driving at or below the posted speed limits. In the 400 block of North Main, officers found that approximately 43 percent of drivers were traveling in compliance with posted speed limits and on Interstate 20 near the 408 mile marker about 23 percent of drivers were driving in compliance with posted speed limits.
With Halloween falling on a weekend this year and many local Halloween/Fall festivities going on, Weatherford Police Department reminds you to be mindful of your surroundings and watch for children and families crossing streets to trick-or-treat or attend events. Please be aware of posted speed limits, always wear your seat-belts, and have a designated driver if alcohol will be a part of your Halloween activities.
