Manna honors volunteers, celebrates mission

Manna Storehouse celebrated with its annual corporation meeting and volunteer recognition luncheon on Thursday at the Central Christian Church.

Manna President Rev. Ann Stevens reminded guests that Manna is unique in the fact that it has operated for 29 years as a fully volunteer organization. It has remained a church-supported ministry, with volunteers and donations from many local churches, serving Christ’s admonition to “feed my sheep.” The organization, having no salaried staff, contributes 87 percent of its income directly to helping Parker County’s needy with food, clothing, household items and utility and prescription assistance.

Stevens emphasized the generosity of the donations to Manna by Parker County residents, which provide items directly to clients and which enable the bi-monthly Manna “Garage Sale.” Proceeds from the Garage Sale have become vital to the utility and prescription assistance funds that Manna distributes. In 2013, Manna served 23,706 clients from 7,513 Parker County families, and the Garage Sale brought in $114,323.60.

Other sources of income came from foundations, individuals, churches and businesses. Donations provided clients $80,995 in utility assistance and $67,115 in prescription aid. Purchases of groceries, totaling approximately $118,000, were added to the many donations of food. Other purchases were for heaters, fans and healthcare items. Donations of clothing and household goods also directly benefited the needs of clients.

The election of new officers and members of Manna’s Board of Directors also took place. Officers for the next triennium include President: Rev. Ann Stephens; Vice-President: John Good; Recording Secretary: Catherine Smith; Corresponding Secretary: Susan Ross; Treasurer: Mike Briggs; Director of Operations: James Woods. Board members elected for this triennium were David Rothrock, Shilo Trielle, Pam Walker and Jeff Williams. Continuing board members are Annette Burks, Vernelle Chadwell, Cathy Kosikowski, Prissy Neely, Debbie Rowe, Janice Smith, Gary Snow and Wanda Yeats.
