Seventeen-year-old Jacob Terrell jumped on a 6-foot-tall pile of brush on top of a tractor trailer to break it down as his mother kept a watchful eye.
“Do you mind if I hold your hand,” Joanne Terrell asked the young man.
Jacob declined and continued his work, and his mother brought more brush to the pile.
“I think we make a pretty good team,” Joanne Terrell said.

The Terrells joined more than 40 volunteers in cleaning up a Southlake home on March 22, as Scholars and Athletes Serving Others (SASO) and Highland Landscaping partnered for an Extreme Yard Makeover.
Mother and son pairs joined professionals in cleaning an overgrown yard on Johnson Road. When the team got to the home Saturday morning the yard was covered in leaves, trees and brush were overgrown.
“We went over to the property and sure enough the place is in need of an extreme yard makeover,” Ian MacLean, Highland Landscaping president said. “It’s really a jungle...”
The effort removed an 8-foot-high pile of brush from the property and volunteers filled more than 100 garbage bags of raked leaves.
In matching safety vests, Grant Stewart, 17, and his mom, Kathryn Stewart, raked and bagged leaves that had piled along the two-lane road. As Grant held garbage bags open, Kathryn scooped the brown leaves with a rake into the bag.
“It feels great to help somebody who doesn’t have the opportunity to help themselves,” Grant Stewart said.
Homeowner Frances Willoughby, 81, lives with her son at the home she’s had for 37 years. In her home, she has photos of the yard once decorated with flowers, a past hobby of hers before she could no longer care of the yard.
“I sure do appreciate it,” she said of the volunteer effort. “Some of that hasn’t seen the light of day in a long time.”
A volunteer showed her a photo of the progress on a cell phone and Willoughby looked surprised and delighted.
“Mark won’t know where to come home to,” she said of her son.
Organizer Laura Hill said she was satisfied with the result and hopes to have another effort to finish the job including replacing an aged, white fence.
