‘You stay,’ Southlake. Take it from a police officer ... and this Grammy Award winner

Brad Uptmore has become something of a local celebrity for his videos on Facebook to help enforce public safety and helpful information.

But during the coronavirus shelter-in-place, the Southlake Department of Public Safety spokesman has turned to another celebrity to help spread the word about staying indoors. Dallas’ own Grammy Award winner, Lisa Loeb, recorded a song he wrote and the video was posted on the City of Southlake Facebook page.

“There’s a site/app called Cameo where people can request celebrities to send shout-outs, greetings, happy birthdays, etc.,” Uptmore said. “I’ve looked at it before but never really had a need for it, as we produce most of our stuff in-house.”

But with the Southlake PD utilizing the best quarantine practices to keep everyone safe, many employees are working from home. That limits the amount of filming Uptmore can do.

“There’s no way I can film anything right now because our firefighters and officers are extremely busy,” he said.

Through Cameo, Uptmore said he was able to post a reminder to the public about staying safe during the pandemic that “got a quick 17,000 views.”

As he was downloading that video, however, something caught his eye. It was his childhood celebrity crush, Loeb.

“Instantly, the bell went off in my head connecting her song ‘Stay’ to what we should all be doing during these hard times,” Uptmore said. “I pulled up her iconic video and started to rewrite it to reflect safety during corona.”

Loeb didn’t know if she’d even take on the project, with it being a rewrite of her own song.

“You only have 250 characters for your request, so I couldn’t even start it out by saying, ‘Hi Lisa, this is Southlake DPS.’ I could only fit in my modified lyrics,” Uptmore said. “It took about 48 hours, and I started to worry she wouldn’t do it because it’s asking a lot, and then, boom, there it was.

“She was cute and fun and even said, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ So I considered it a success. She was one of my teenage crushes so stuff like this blows my mind.”

Here are Uptmore’s lyrics:

“You stay

In your house here in Southlake

And you stay

Home, cause they say to

So, Only leave if it is essential

And keep on social distancing

And soon this will all be over

Sing a song while you wash both your hands

Cause we will too

Yeah yeah,

We will too.”
