Mansfield picks up win against Highland Park
The Mansfield Varsity Silver hockey team defeated Highland Park on Thursday night by a score of 4-1 at the Euless StarCenter Green Arena to improve to 7-3 on the season with one overtime win and two overtime losses and remain in [blank] place in the division standings.
While Mansfield outshot Highland park by a margin of 12-4 in the first period, neither team scored, and the game was 0-0 heading into the second period.
Nicholas Cyprian broke through with an unassisted goal at the 11:51 mark of the second period to give the varsity silver team a 1-0 lead.
Just 20 seconds later, Cameron Bickford extended Mansfield’s lead on an assist from Brooks Herrod and the team led 2-0 early in the period.
The varsity silver squad picked up a two-minute bench minor for too many men on the ice, and Highland Park broke through for its only goal of the game.
The score was 2-1 heading into the third period.
Early in the third period, William Frye scored a short-handed goal on an assist from Bickford to make it a two-goal game in favor of Mansfield once again.
Bickford scored his second goal of the night with 1:14 to play in the third period on an assist from Frye to put the game out of reach.
Mansfield outshot Highland Park 30-10 in the game, and Cole Seevers stopped nine out of 10 shots for the varsity silver team.
Mansfield will play next at 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 21 against Keller at the Euless Green Arena.
Timberview tops state poll
The Timberview girls basketball team topped the state rankings in the Class 5A division to start the month of January, with a perfect 23-0 record as of Jan. 14 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
