Mansfield swim-dive team aims to sweep district meet

The Mansfield swim and dive team is gearing up for its district meet in two weeks, and coach Matt Bold said that his team is competing at a pretty high level at the moment.

Mansfield competed in the Lubbock Invitational as a final warm-up before the District 8-6A meet on Jan. 22, where Bold said expectations for his team are quite high.

“The top six in each event qualify for regionals, and we can only enter four swimmers or divers per team,” Bold said. “Our goal is to get as many of those four spots out as possible. In some events, we have a good shot at getting all four of our entries out. Our goal is a sweep for both the boys and girls at district. Anything less than that would be a disappointment right now for us. We definitely have our sights set on being district champions.”

The Mansfield girls have won five consecutive district championships and the boys have won four of the last five district meets.

“We definitely want to keep that streak running,” Bold said.

The Mansfield teams had an excellent showing at Lubbock last weekend, and Bold said he really could not have asked for much more from his athletes.

“I was very surprised with the way we swam Friday during prelims,” Bold said. “Usually, when we swim this meet, after riding on the bus for five hours, we come out a little flat, because people are tired. We really pushed through this year and had one of the best prelim sessions we’ve ever had.

“That set us up really well to swim well on Saturday. The girls finished second overall, just seconds out of first place, and the boys finished in fourth place.”

A total of 20 teams competed at the invitational on each side.

Nick Miller won the 1-meter and 3-meter dive and Michael Thibert won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke event, setting a meet record and tying the pool record.

Sara McClendon won the 200 and 500 free at the meet, and Lauren Thompson won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

The girls 400 free relay of Thompson, McClendon, Ryan McClendon and Payton Arber also won the Lubbock Invitational swim meet.
