Soccer kicks off for local teams

The Lake Ridge girls started their soccer season with an ambivalent result. But the follow up has been positive.

The first two games of the Richland Tournament produced two ties for the Lady Eagles. Games with Justin Northwest and Arlington Heights both ended in 1-1 draws.

After a 2-1 win over Birdville, though, the Lady Eagles advanced to the semifinals against Burleson Centennial.

Lake Ridge will play this week at Ennis and Red Oak.

Timberview’s Lady Wolves lost their opener to Cleburne, 2-0 and then played Mesquite Horn.

Summit started its season at Arlington Sam Houston’s tournament and beat L.D. Bell, 1-0.

The Lady Jaguars dropped a disappointing game to Corsicana before taking care of Eastern Hills.

The district season gets started this week, with Summit taking Arlington Seguin and Waxahachie. Legacy this week, while Timberview has Lancaster and Seguin.

Mansfield will take on Kennedale and Arlington with the district schedule starting on Jan. 29. The Lady Tigers opened the season with a 5-1 win over Rowlett.

On the boys side, Lake Ridge knocked off Red Oak, 3-1 and beat host team Highland Park in their own tournament by the same 3-1 score. The Eagles also got a game in on Saturday with Dallas Sunset.

Legacy played in the Crowley Tournament and picked up a win and loss early.

A 3-1 win over Dumas was followed by a 4-1 loss to Arlington Lamar. This week, the Broncos will play at Midlothian and Ennis.

Timberview was playing at the Azle tournament and had a first-round match-up with Eastern Hills.

After playing at Lancaster on Tuesday, Timberview will be at home on Friday to play Seguin.

Mansfield hockey still in contention following loss

The Mansfield Varsity Silver team was in fifth place following a 5-2 loss to Grapevine/Colleyville last Thursday. The team is just two points out of a tie for third place.

They’ll be back on the ice this Thursday with game against Highland Park.

In the loss last week, Nicholas Cyprian (Cameron Bickford assist) and Kyle Scott (Brooks Herrod) registered the Mansfield goals.

The JV Silver version of the Mansfield team is in sixth place in the standings.

They got a 2-0 win over Keller (Easton Walters and Dalton Rodgers goals) after a tough 4-3 OT loss to Coppell.

In the loss to Coppell, Michael Caldwell scored two goals, while Luke Montez scored the other. Rodgers, Cameron Keplinger, Hunter Watson and Torsten Lindquist were credited with assists.

A big comeback against John Paul II on Sunday helped the team further, as Mansfield scored two goals a minute apart in the third period to win, 6-4.

James DeMarque scored at the 11:45 mark of the third before Connor Gent scored 60 seconds later.
