Summit coach receives state honor

Summit girls track coach Shannon Utley was recently named as the 2014-2015, 5A-6A Texas Girls Coaches Association Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Utley has been at Summit for five years and with the Mansfield ISD for 12 years.

Also making the TGCA All-State selection list are Ivy Walker, Summit and JaLeesa Giles, Legacy. Both will be returning for more possible honors next year, as Walker is a junior and Giles a sophomore. Both were state meet qualifiers with Walker, taking the 5A state title in the long jump and fourth in the 100m hurdles. Giles was third in the 200m dash and fourth in the 100m.

Jackson signs with TSU

Summit point guard Nia Jackson has signed to play basketball with Tarleton State University. Jackson led the Lady Jags in scoring last year, averaging just under 13 points per game.

Soccer honors for Lake Ridge players

Colten O’Brian and Taylor Lampke were named to the Star-Telegram Boys Soccer Super Team.

O’Brian, a midfielder, and Lampke, a goalkeeper, had both received All-District honors.

O’Brian was the MVP of District 14-5A, while Lampke was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

The Global Futbol Training summer camp, offered through the Mansfield Soccer Association, is slated for July 6-16 at the Mansfield Sports Complex. It will be conducted from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for players who will be at least six years old on or before Aug. 8.

Sports camps start soon with Mansfield offering new twist

All Mansfield ISD high schools will be offering summer sports camps this summer, with the first to begin June 9.

All five high schools will band together for the softball camp June 9-11. The softball camp will be held at Summit High School and is for girls entering grades 4-9.

A unique summer camp will be hosted by Mansfield. The 2015 Tiger Baseball Pitcher/Catcher Camp will be held June 22- 24 at the school from 1-3 p.m.

The camp is designed for 10 year-olds to incoming freshmen but is limited to 30 players.

Coach Gary Vaughan will lead the clinic and will focus on pitching mechanics, pick-offs, bullpen routines and how to field the position. Catchers will work on receiving, blocking, throwing and footwork.

The World In our own Backyard: World Cup watch event

The Mansfield Soccer Association and Mansfield Revolution Soccer Club are partnering to bring the World Cup to Mansfield. They are hosting a World Cup watching party at Katherine Rose Memorial Park on a 108 square-foot big screen TV on Friday June 12, as the US Women's team takes on Sweden at 7 p.m.

Also included is a 5K run, a 1-Mile Fun Run, soccer golf, soccer croquet, soccer volleyball, a radar gun for soccer speed kicks, food trucks, T-shirt sale and activities. Expected start time of the activities is 3 p.m., with the 1-Mile run kicking off at 5.15 p.m. and the 5K run starting at 5.30 p.m.

Parking is available at R.L. Anderson Stadium. Participants can walk under Walnut Creek Drive via the tunnel.
