A series of chain-reaction wrecks on a Mansfield highway landed several people in the hospital Friday night, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
Police responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of the 1700 block of U.S. 287 at about 6:30 p.m., according to a news release. Traffic was backed up about a mile as the crash investigation continued.
Twenty minutes later, a pickup crashed into three vehicles that were stopped in the 900 block of the highway, about a mile south. Four children and one adult were taken to the hospital.
While police were still investigating those two wrecks, five more vehicles were involved in two separate wrecks, this time in the southbound lanes. “Several” people were taken to the hospital, and one driver is being investigated for a possible DWI, according to police.
One child was in serious condition at the hospital, and all the other people hospitalized were listed in stable condition.
Police diverted traffic onto the frontage roads until about 10 p.m. Friday while working to clear the highway.
