January 18King celebration

Join Bethlehem Baptist Church to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. at 5 p.m. at the church, 1188 W. Broad St. Everyone is invited.

January 19Martin Luther King Jr. DaySchool’s out

Schools in the Mansfield district will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Movie

Watch “Madagascar” at 6:30 p.m. at Farr Best Theater, 109 N. Main St. Admission is $1 for ages 13 and younger, $2 general seating.

School board

The Mansfield school board will meet at 7 p.m. in the Mansfield ISD Center for Performing Arts, 1110 W. Debbie Lane. The meeting is open to the public.

Dance music

Put on your cowboy boots and head to the Western Kountry Klub to dance to the Mack & Dyan Band from 7-9:30 p.m. Admission is $5; BYOB; adults only. January 22Funeral planning

Skyvue Funeral Home will host an advance planning seminar at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at 7220 Rendon Bloodworth Road. Get legal, hospice and pre-funeral planning advice, plus refreshments and door prizes. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Call 817-478-6955.

January 23Block party

First United Methodist will host a block party to welcome Alice Ponder Elementary back to the neighborhood from 6:30-8 p.m. at the church, 777 N. Walnut Creek Drive. There will be a petting zoo, bounce houses, music, hot dogs, crafts and activities. Everyone is welcome.

January 24Live music

Get the blues with Jason Elmore & Hoodoo Witch, starting at 8 p.m. at the Farr Best, 109 N. Main St. Admission is $16-$22. Go to www.farrbest.com for tickets or more information.

Winter Walk

Head to Katherine Rose Memorial Park, 303 N. Walnut Creek Drive, at 9 a.m. to participate in Winter Walk, the city’s annual group stroll along the Walnut Creek Linear Trail. Go for a long hike to McKnight Park East, or a short jaunt to Town Park. Free.

City Council meeting

Elvis tribute

Shake, rattle and roll with Elvis tribute artist Drake Milligan at 7:30 p.m., followed by a screening of “Nobody,” a short film about the early life of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll starring Milligan. Tickets are $20. Go to www.farrbest.com for more information.

February 1School dedications

The Mansfield school district will dedicate two new schools, Alice Ponder Elementary, 102 Pleasant Ridge Drive, at 2 p.m., and J.L. Boren Elementary, 1400 Country Club Drive, at 3:45 p.m. The public is invited.
