Forty piano students participated in the Annual National Piano Playing Auditions held in Mansfield for three days ending June 17. Teachers entering students in the Mansfield auditions were Mickey Legg, Karen Shugart, Jo Anne Thomson and Dee Walraven. Judges were Reva Jean Beck and Harriet Motter. Students auditioned on a Steinway grand piano at the Legg studio. Thomson, accompanying several students, played on a Tokai studio piano. Those students also played in ensembles at the Texas State Music Teachers Convention held in Houston this month.
Guild auditions are held in hundreds of cities throughout the nation and abroad. The National Guild of Piano Teachers is the largest, non-profit organization of piano teachers in the world. Membership has grown to over 118,000 participating in the Guild goals and awards each year. The primary function of the NGPT is to establish definite goals and awards for piano students of all levels and grades--goals for the earliest beginner as well as the artistic adult. Students can work toward Guild Diplomas and scholarships. The Mansfield auditions included 11 10-piece programs and one 15-piece program.
