After years with a constable serving as the city’s only peace officer, Mansfield hired its first police chief in 1954. C.J. Prater was hired and his wife served as the dispatcher from their home. He also had to furnish his own car. With a low salary and no police vehicle, the city saw a large turnover in the police chief job. There was a new chief every year from 1954 to 1961.
