KISD students excel at Academic Decathlon meet

The Keller High School Academic Decathlon team is tops in the region and will compete at the state meet Feb. 26 to March 1 in San Antonio.

Keller High School earned a berth by finishing first at the 2015 Region XI Academic Decathlon Competition Jan. 31 in Plano.

All four Keller ISD high school Academic Decathlon teams participated in the competition with Timber Creek finishing in third, Fossil Ridge placing fourth and Central coming in sixth.

In Academic Decathlon, each team is composed of three “A” students (honors division), three “B” students (scholastic division) and three “C” students (varsity division). Academic Decathletes compete individually in 10 different events: Social Science, Math, Art, Music, Economics, Science, Literature, Essay, Speech, and Interview.

The contest also includes Super Quiz, where each member must answer different questions. In Super Quiz, Keller High finished second while Timber Creek came in third.

Several Keller ISD students earned recognition for individual overall awards within their divisions.

Honors Division: Christina Mai, TCHS, second place; Grace Sheng, KHS, third place; Max Liu, KHS, fourth place; and Kendall Jeffreys, KHS, fifth place. Scholastic Division: Braylee Grisel, KHS, first place; Cody Shoop, KHS, second place; Tony Annerino, TCHS, third place; and Dustin Denetz, TCHS, fourth place. Varsity Division: Christian Turnley, KHS, first place; Taylor Driscoll, KHS, fourth place; and Erick McCollum, FRHS, fifth place.
