Athletes from across the area participated in the Keller ISD Chad Powell Memorial Special Olympics meet March 22 at Fossil Ridge High School.
Students raced, jumped and threw their way to medals and ribbons, cheered and assisted by KISD high school student “buddies” and district employees. The meet was rescheduled from earlier in the month due to wet weather. Windy conditions meant the unlit torch was carried as a symbol.
For more than a decade, the meet has been named in honor of Chad Powell, a Keller High School valedictorian who was killed in the 1999 Texas A&M bonfire collapse. Powell was a frequent Special Olympics volunteer and his family continues his tradition with their involvement in the festive competition.
