Metroport Meals on Wheels stocking tree program celebrates 10 years

For the past 10 years, the annual Metroport Meals On Wheels (MMOW) Stockings for Seniors program has served the community.

Early in October, MMOW volunteer ‘elves’ begin visiting with MMOW’s home-delivery participants to determine the “wishes and wants” of each home-bound senior.

Then, Santa lights the Stocking Tree in Sadie’s Upscale Consignment and Resale and elves decorate it with paper stockings listing those special gifts.

A second Stocking Tree with stockings for Wise County participants is set up at Tater Junction Restaurant in Aurora.

Everyone sharing in the program walks away with something special: from the donors who lovingly select the gifts, the volunteers who deliver the gifts, the corporate groups who participate and the civic groups that embrace the seniors.

“We all are touched in special ways,” said Mary King, executive director.

MMOW invites individuals or groups to join with them in the spirit of the season.

In addition to individualized gifts, the seniors’ stockings are filled with useful items that add to their holiday cheer and extend the season well into the New Year.

This year, the wish list for stocking stuffers includes 160 each of the following: toilet tissue, Kleenex, paper towels, books of stamps and boxes of bandaids.

Once all the gifts are purchased and delivered to MMOW, a team of Santa’s elves will be needed to help wrap the presents.

For more information about the Stocking Tree drive and to see how to become involved, or to sign on for “Elf Duty,” contact Nansii Downer at 817-4918534 or NDowner@MetroportMOW.org or stop by Sadie’s Consignment and Resale Shop at 432 Hwy 377 in Roanoke to pick out a stocking.

MMOW extends a huge thank you to the donors and volunteers who will make the season special.
