We had a great weekend of high school football. It started on Thursday when then snake-bitten Keller finally got things to go its way and pulled off a 44-39 victory over Keller Central. You really can’t call it an upset, because Keller has been in every game this year and a couple of plays have cost it a couple of wins.
Carroll overcame Coppell running back Charles West’s amazing performance, scored in the closing seconds and pulled out a 28-24 victory.
Byron Nelson nearly pulled off the upset of Denton Ryan but fell short. But most importantly, Grapevine removed the zero from the win column and picked up its first victory with a 45-0 pounding of Fort Worth Poly.
As for the picks, Keller Central got us again. We picked the Chargers over Keller. They lost. Arrrgggghhh!!
So let’s get going this week with everybody in action.
Last Week: 4-2
Denton Ryan (3-2, 1-1) at Keller Timber Creek (3-2, 0-2); 7 p.m. Thursday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: This game is really the season for the Falcons. A loss here puts them at 0-3 in district with Denton Guyer, Keller Central and Keller still to play. That makes it nearly impossible for them to climb out of that hole and get into the playoff discussion. Ryan has been very up and down. But I think the Raiders will have enough.
Prediction: Denton Ryan 23, Keller Timber Creek 16
Keller Fossil Ridge (5-0, 2-0) at Denton Guyer (4-1, 2-0); 7 p.m. Friday, C.H. Collins Complex, Denton: This is the game of the weekend. And it could be for the district championship. Fossil Ridge wasn’t sharp but did enough to take care of business against Keller Timber Creek. Guyer had to withstand Northwest’s late rally. With a really talented quarterback like Shawn Robinson, the smart money makes you defer to the home team. And while you could also say Fossil Ridge hasn’t played the five the toughest opponents yet – combined record is 12-14 – this is a really good squad. We’re not going to take the safe pick.
Prediction: Keller Fossil Ridge 43, Denton Guyer 40
Justin Northwest (2-3, 0-2) at Keller Central (3-2, 1-1); 7 p.m. Friday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Denton: Like Timber Creek, the Texans can’t put themselves in an 0-3 district hole because that virtually puts them out of the playoff hunt. With so many new faces on defense, the inexperience is showing. Keller Central is the better team but I do I trust the Chargers, who are the most unpredictable team in this area?
Prediction: Keller Central 35, Justin Northwest 30
Keller (2-3, 1-1) at Byron Nelson (2-3, 1-1); 7 p.m. Friday, NISD Stadium, Justin: This is “separation Friday” where the winner puts itself in a pretty good position for the postseason because of a tiebreaker. Keller has Fossil Ridge to play. Nelson has both Guyer and Fossil Ridge. This game won’t get the hype Fossil Ridge-Guyer are receiving. But the Bobcats are hanging tough in their first season in Class 6A. Still, I think Keller may have found something after last week’s win over Keller Central.
Prediction: Keller 30, Northwest Byron Nelson 27
Carroll (5-0, 1-0) at Richland (3-3, 2-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Birdville Fine Arts & Athletic Complex, North Richland Hills: Don’t look now, but the Rebels are on a roll. They’ve won their last three and scored at least 35 points in each. Carroll starts a stretch where the Rebels face the District 7-6A hierarchy. The Rebels will push, but the Dragons will remain perfect.
Prediction: Carroll 41, Richland 14
Haltom (0-6, 0-2) at Colleyville Heritage (2-3, 0-1); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mustang-Panther Stadium, Grapevine: The Panthers are coming off their bye and should be in pretty good shape. They will get well against the hapless Buffalos, who have been shut out twice and not played a game within single digits.
Prediction: Colleyville Heritage 38, Haltom 7
Grapevine (1-5, 1-1) at Fort Worth Dunbar (4-1, 1-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Clark Stadium, Fort Worth: If you just looked at the record, this should be a no-brainer. But the Wildcats’ wins haven’t come against great competition. Plus, the Mustangs defeated Fort Worth Poly more impressively (45-0) than Dunbar did (48-21). We’re going to put our faith in the Mustangs again.
Prediction: Grapevine 34, Dunbar 28
