Keller has three fire stations.
Having a Station No. 4 for several years puzzled many.
“It was very confusing for people,” said Battalion Chief Shane Gainer. “There was a reason for it years ago but things have changed.”
Since 2009, Keller has had three fire stations, called Stations 2, 3 and 4. Gainer said that more than 20 years ago, as changes were underway in the department, fire administration wanted to eventually build a central Station 1 that would also house administration.

“And it never happened,” Gainer said.
When the newest station was built in 2009, the department named it Station 4, saving the Station 1 name for the expected central station and firefighters got used to the system.
However, “it keeps creating confusion” among residents and others outside the department, Gainer said, and with abstract plans for that central station somewhere in the future, the current fire chief, David Jones, decided to nip the confusion in the bud.
Station 4 is now Station 1.
The department made the change internally a few weeks ago, but the number on the outside of the building will be changed soon.
Gainer likened the change within the department to New Year’s day.
“Back in the day, when you were writing checks, how many times did you write the previous year out of habit?” he said. “It’s kind of like that, but they’re already getting used to it.”
Gainer said the central station, envisioned more than 20 years ago, is “not expected to be soon.”
